Woodstock, Illinois is a city situated in McHenry County. The city serves as the county seat of McHenry County and according to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 25,178 people live in Woodstock. The city is located about 65 miles north of Downtown Chicago, Illinois, and about 45 miles north of O’Hare International Airport.

Woodstock was founded in 1844 under the name Centerville. The city was constructed in the exact center of McHenry County and designated to serve as the county seat. One year later, Centerville was renamed as Woodstock in honor of the original settlers who were natives of Vermont. Woodstock became incorporated in 1852 and in 1873 became a city.

There are many things to see and do in the City of Woodstock. Individuals who enjoy history will find plenty of attractions in Woodstock. The city is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognized as a Distinctive Destination by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and named a Preserve America Community by the White House. Several events take place annually in Woodstock such as the Fair Diddley Art Fair, Summer Band Concerts, and the award winning Farmer’s Market. The most notable event Woodstock is host to is the Victorian Christmas Celebration. During this event, carolers stroll the streets, horse-drawn carriage rides are available for guests, and the historic Square is decorated with thousands of miniature lights.
